Have you ever thought about sharing your experience in braces in writing, but just didn't know how? Well, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists are proud to offer the Braces Brigade campaign, where not only you can share your experience with millions of people, but you can come away with a $100 American Express gift card as well.

All applicants must either be an orthodontic patient here at Hughes Orthodontics or the parent of a patient (pre- and post- treatment stages are fine).

To complete your Braces Brigade application, you'll need to provide:

* Name
* Age – Must be 14 years of age or older
* E-mail
* Phone number
* Stage of orthodontic treatment
* A photo of your braces/smile

In your blog, we encourage you to answer the following questions:

• Why did you decide to get orthodontic treatment?
• What advice would you share with other orthodontic patients?
• What does it feel like to get braces on?
• What foods do you miss the most?
• What new foods have you discovered?
• Do your friends have braces or retainers?
• Where is the first place you’re going to show off your new, beautiful smile?
• How has your new smile changed your life?

If you're under 18, your parents must fill out this form along with your official entry, giving you permission to enter the contest.

  1. I would love to share my experience as a patient of the elder Dr. Hughes in the 70's as I am a case of "what not to do"!! I lost my 2 front teeth at a young age (apparently due to bottle-rot) and was seen first by Dr. Hughes at age 6 for a retainer to keep the space open in front for my permanent teeth. At age 11 I got braces the first time. Braces came off two years later and after futile attempts to keep my teeth from moving back, the braces went back on at age 16. Now in my late 40's, I have bone loss, root resorption and gum loss. I still have a cross-bite and the only teeth that meet are my front teeth, _not_ the molars in the back! When the periodontist saw my x-rays for the first time, all he could say was, "Boy, you had a lot of orthodontics!" I have 3 older siblings and none of them have these problems. (None of them had braces, either.) Apparently, in the 70's it wasn't known that moving teeth too much could cause future problems. I am extra cautious with my own children now. Yes, they have had braces, but my ortho. knows of my experience and is being conservative in their treatment. I have been told that I was a surgical candidate and I have a problem with tongue thrust. In Dr, Hughes' defense, I do not know if surgery or speech therapy was offered to my parents. But, because of the braces, I am now undergoing _extensive_ and expensive periodontic treatment to try and save my teeth. And I do brush, floss, and get regular checkups. There was just too much damage done during my 12 year stint with orthodontics!
